Troubleshooting

Winger Will Not Launch

If the winger fails to launch, you first need to determine if it is making any sound when activated:

  • If the Winger makes a sound (coming from the release mechanism):

    • Buzzing/whirling sound: This indicates a faulty servo (either the motor or the gears). It is recommended to replace it with a new metal gears servo. (Note: If the winger predates 2008 and has a blue solenoid actuator, contact the office for assistance).

    • Clicking from the trigger: Look for dirt or debris impeding operation. Clean it with high-pressure air and lubricate the mechanical parts.

    • Weak buzzing sound: The electronics batteries may need charging or replacing. Batteries older than 2 years frequently cause launch failures.

    • Release arm opens but the basket hangs up: Check the release arm for rough spots or burrs where the pouch ring slides off. Clean with WD-40 and compressed air, and buff the area with a file or emery cloth so the parts move freely.

  • If the Winger does not make a sound (no audible sound from the release mechanism):

    • Electronics: Your release electronics or batteries might be dead or defective. Test the electronics on another winger, take them to a service outlet, or call the manufacturer.

    • Wire Harness: Wear and tear can cause a faulty wire harness, plug, or quick connectors. Replace this part if you suspect it is damaged.

    • Servo: You may have a completely defective servo. If you cannot isolate the exact cause, replacing both the servo and the wire harness is recommended.

  • Rubbers not hooked up properly: Ensure all rubbers are hooked up and pull the rubbers/rings down to their proper anchors.

  • Bird is contacting the frame: Place the bird vertically into the pouch with the head and wings tucked under the body. The tail and legs should extend out the top edge to prevent it from flopping out and hitting the frame.

  • Rubbers need replacing: Worn or stretched rubber tubing needs to be replaced.

  • Extreme cold conditions: Freezing temperatures affect the stretch of the rubber. If the rubbers freeze, move the winger inside until the tubing returns to normal.

  • Uneven ground: Always ensure the winger is on level, stable ground.

  • Bird is contacting the frame on launch: Center the bird vertically and flat against the pouch. If using a large duck, position any overhang at the top end to avoid interference with the frame.

  • Extreme angle: Try lowering the arc of the winger so it has a more stable footing.

  • Faulty primers: Try using fresh primers.

  • Worn-out rubbers: If the rubbers are worn, they won’t generate enough force to fire the primer. Replace them as needed.

  • Rubbers not hooked up: Ensure you hook the pouch’s release bolt to the release arm, positioned as far over as it can go.

  • Incorrect loading: Double-check that you inserted the correct primer into the correct hole.
